Function and technical context
The starter key 5005801 (ref. REC5005801) is part of the electric ignition system of OMC outboard engines, acting as the main control element to start and stop the engine from the boat's control panel. Its function is to close and open the starting electrical circuit, allowing both the rotation of the starter motor and the activation of the engine's electrical systems. As it is the primary contact point of the ignition system, a key in poor condition can prevent starting, cause unexpected engine cuts while navigating or generate intermittent failures in the electrical circuit. This component replaces OMC references 0175974, 0765562 and 175974, with reference 5005801 being the updated version of the key, switch and security lanyard assembly (SWITCH, KEY & LANYARD).
When to replace this part?
The most common symptoms of wear on a starter key are difficulty turning the ignition, intermittent starting with no apparent cause in the engine, or the inability to turn off the ignition normally. It can also manifest as a failure in the emergency stop circuit if the associated safety lanyard mechanism loses continuity. It is recommended to check the condition of the ignition key during each seasonal maintenance; Replacing it preventively at the first symptoms avoids being left without engine control at sea, with the safety risk that this entails.
