POLYESTER RESIN CATALYST 750GR.
Description
Function and technical context
Polyester resin with catalyst is the reference composite material in the construction and repair of hulls, decks and fiberglass structures in recreational and professional boats. Its function is to consolidate and harden the layers of fiberglass (mat or roving) forming a rigid matrix that provides mechanical resistance, watertightness and durability to the naval structure. It is used in laminate work, osmosis repair, crack sealing, reinforcement of weakened areas and construction of custom parts. Without the correct proportion of catalyst (methyl ethyl ketone peroxide, MEKP), the resin does not catalyze correctly and the resulting part lacks the mechanical properties necessary to resist hydrodynamic stresses and navigation conditions.
When to replace or use this part?
Polyester resin has a limited shelf life: if the material is lumpy, has partially gelled in the container, or does not catalyze correctly after adding the hardener, it should be discarded and replaced with fresh product. In hull repairs, it is recommended to check the joint and laminate areas at each annual beaching, paying special attention to osmosis blisters, delaminations or visible fractures, which are the most common symptoms that require resin lamination work. Always keeping the complete kit - resin and catalyst - allows urgent repairs to be tackled in the shipyard without delays, preventing minor damage to the hull from turning into costly structural breakdowns.
