Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are the electrochemical shield of any boat: their function is to protect the metal components of the hull, tail shaft, propeller and stainless steel or bronze accessories against galvanic corrosion caused by prolonged contact with seawater or fresh water. This zinc anode, with dimensions 200×110×30 mm and reference TEN00266, is designed specifically for Sea Ray boats, and acts as a consumable element that degrades in a controlled manner instead of the noble metals of the hull. By sacrificing itself electrochemically, it prevents accelerated oxidation of rudders, horns, keel bolts and other structural elements whose repair or replacement involves expensive and complex dockside interventions. The correct installation of this anode guarantees electrical continuity with the metal surfaces to be protected, optimizing their performance throughout the entire navigation season.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that an anode needs to be replaced is when it has lost between 50% and 60% of its mass: at that point, the remaining active surface no longer offers sufficient protection and the noble metals of the vessel are exposed to galvanic corrosion. In practice, it is advisable to inspect the anodes at each beaching or at least at the beginning and end of each nautical season, since the rate of consumption varies depending on the salinity of the water, the parasitic currents of the pontoon and the hours of navigation. Replacing the anode preventively, even if it still has remaining material, is a minimal investment compared to the cost of repairing a corroded propeller, a damaged horn or a rudder attacked by electrolysis.
