RECTANGULAR ANODE 400x80x30
Description
Function and technical context
Rectangular sacrificial anodes are essential cathodic protection elements in hulls, keels, rudders and submerged metal structures of vessels. Its function is to sacrifice itself electrochemically in place of the ship's noble metals—steel, aluminum or bronze—by acting as a negative pole in the galvanic cell that forms in salt or brackish water. This anode with dimensions 400x80x30 mm is designed to be installed by screwing directly onto flat hull surfaces or structural appendages, offering a large reaction surface that guarantees effective protection throughout the season. Without adequate cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion silently attacks propellers, shafts, rudders and the hull itself, generating structural damage with high repair costs.
When to replace this part?
The clearest sign that an anode must be changed is when it has lost between 50% and 70% of its mass: if it appears reduced, irregular or with deep cracks, it no longer protects effectively and corrosion advances on the parts it was supposed to defend. The standard technical recommendation is to inspect the hull anodes at least once a season—coinciding with the annual beaching—and replace them preventively if their wear exceeds that threshold, regardless of the time elapsed. Replacing the anode before it is completely consumed is the most economical measure to avoid replacing corroded shafts, propellers or hull sections.
