Description

Function and technical context

Rectangular sacrificial anodes play an essential role in the cathodic protection of vessels and submerged structures: they corrode in a controlled manner instead of the noble metals of the hull, propellers, shafts and propulsion accessories. Made of high-purity zinc alloy, this 290x90x40 mm rectangular anode works in the boat's galvanic protection system, neutralizing the difference in electrical potential that is generated between different metals in contact with water. Their absence or depletion leaves critical components such as rudders, horns, keel bolts and propeller blades exposed to accelerated corrosion that can compromise the structural integrity of the vessel.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious sign that the anode is exhausted is a visible reduction in its mass: when the anode has lost more than 50% of its volume, it has ceased to offer effective protection and must be replaced immediately. It is recommended to inspect the anodes at each beaching or at least once per nautical season, and replace them preventively at the beginning of each season if they show noticeable wear, regardless of the time elapsed. Renewing the anode in time is the most economical measure to avoid damage due to galvanic corrosion in high-cost components such as tail shafts, propellers or rudders.
