Function and technical context
Rectangular sacrificial anodes act as cathodic protection on hulls, boats and submerged metal structures, attracting galvanic corrosion to themselves to preserve the noble metals of the assembly. This 220x100x30 mm rectangular zinc anode is installed directly on the hull, keels, rudders or structural surfaces where marine electrolysis can cause severe long-term damage. Being the least noble metal in the galvanic circuit, the anode is consumed in a controlled manner, preventing corrosion from affecting propellers, shafts, horns, hull closures and other critical metal components of the boat. Without adequate cathodic protection, submerged metal elements can rapidly degrade, leading to costly hull repairs or replacement of propulsion components.
When to replace this part?
The clearest sign that a sacrificial anode needs to be replaced is a visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately 50% of its volume, it no longer offers sufficient protection and must be replaced without delay. For boats in salt or brackish water areas with high conductivity, it is recommended to inspect the anodes at least once per nautical season and always replace them before corrosion reaches the parts they protect. Replacing the anode preventively at each grounding or annual inspection is the most recommended practice by naval mechanics, since the cost of the anode is minimal compared to repairing a hull or shaft damaged by electrolysis.
