Description

Function and technical context

Rectangular sacrificial anodes protect the boat's submerged metal elements—hulls, shafts, propellers, stern anodes, and aluminum or steel structures—against galvanic corrosion, one of the most aggressive degradation processes in the marine environment. This anode, made of high-purity zinc alloy, acts as a negative electrode in the galvanic cell that is formed when different metals coexist in an electrolyte such as salt or brackish water: by sacrificing itself, it preserves the integrity of the components of greatest structural value. Its rectangular geometry of 200×80×22 mm makes it especially suitable for fixing on flat hull surfaces, keels, stern plates and other structures with a large exposed surface. Without correct cathodic protection, corrosion advances silently until it compromises the watertightness and structural resistance of the boat.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious sign that the anode has completed its life cycle is a visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately 50% of its volume, it must be replaced immediately, since its protective capacity is greatly compromised. The recommended inspection is at least once per nautical season - coinciding with the beaching or annual fairing - although in waters with high conductivity or in vessels with high electrical activity on board it is advisable to inspect it every 3-4 months. Replacing the anode preventively before it is completely consumed is the most economical measure to avoid high-cost structural repairs to the hull, shaft or propeller.
