RECTANGULAR ANODE 190x65x30
Description
Function and technical context
Rectangular sacrificial anodes are fundamental elements in the cathodic protection system of vessels, acting as an electrochemical shield against galvanic corrosion that affects submerged metals. This 190x65x30 mm rectangular anode is installed directly on the hull, keel, rudder or other metal surfaces of the boat, attracting corrosive ions present in sea or brackish water to itself and oxidizing in a controlled manner instead of structural parts or propeller components. Without adequate cathodic protection, critical elements such as the tailshaft, propeller, saildrive or bronze and stainless steel hardware are affected by electrolytic corrosion, which can compromise the structural integrity of the boat and lead to high-cost repairs. The correct selection and placement of anodes is, therefore, an essential preventive measure in any nautical maintenance program.
When to replace this part?
The main indicator that a sacrificial anode needs to be replaced is the loss of between 50% and 60% of its mass: when the anode shows a visible reduction of material, cracks, surface disintegration or is reduced to less than half its volume, it has exhausted its protective capacity and must be replaced immediately. The inspection of the anodes should be carried out at least once a season, preferably during the annual beaching, although in waters with high electrical conductivity or in vessels with poor on-board electrical installations a semi-annual inspection may be necessary. Replacing the anode preventively before it is completely exhausted is the only guarantee that the noble metals of the boat are protected throughout navigation, avoiding irreversible damage in areas that are difficult to access and costly to repair.
