Rectangular sacrificial anodes act as an electrochemical shield for the vessel's submerged metal components, attracting galvanic corrosion to themselves to protect aluminum or steel propellers, shafts, rudders, keels and hulls. This zinc anode with rectangular geometry and dimensions 180×65×30 mm is installed directly on flat surfaces of the hull or submerged structures where continuous cathodic protection is essential. When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that a sacrificial anode needs to be replaced is the visible reduction in its mass: when the anode has lost approximately half of its volume – or has a very irregular and eroded surface – it has exhausted its protective capacity and must be replaced immediately. As a general maintenance rule, zinc anodes in marine environments are inspected at least once a season and replaced before wear exceeds 50% of their volume, or at least every nautical year in saltwater. Replacing the anode preventively at the beginning of each season is the most common practice among naval mechanics, since the cost of this component is insignificant compared to repairing a corroded shaft or a hull damaged by galvanic corrosion.
