SEA RAY STERN ANODE
Description
Function and technical context
This aft anode acts as a sacrificial element in the Sea Ray boat cathodic protection system, attracting electrolytic corrosion to itself to preserve the structural metal parts of the hull, rudder, propeller and shafts. It works in the boat's anti-electrolyte system, being the first barrier against galvanolysis caused by the combined action of salt or brackish water and dispersed currents. Without a healthy anode, submerged metal components suffer accelerated corrosion, which can compromise the structural integrity of the hull and lead to serious and costly failures in the aft area.
When to replace this part?
The clearest sign that the anode needs to be replaced is when it has lost between 30% and 50% of its mass due to wear, or when it has an irregular, soft surface or deep cracks that indicate that it no longer offers effective protection. It is recommended to inspect and replace the stern anode at the beginning of each nautical season or after prolonged periods of navigation in waters with high conductivity, such as marinas with a lot of electrical activity. Replacing it preventively is the most economical decision: the cost of a new anode is negligible compared to the repair of a shaft, rudder or hull damaged by galvanic corrosion.
