Description

Function and technical context

Plate anodes are cathodic protection elements designed to prevent galvanic corrosion in hulls, shafts, rudders and submerged metal structures of vessels. Made of high-purity zinc alloy, this anode acts as a sacrificial metal: it preferentially corrodes instead of the structural components of the boat, protecting aluminum, stainless steel and bronze against electrolysis produced in the water. With dimensions of 455x100x55 mm, it is designed to be installed directly on the hull or on flat surfaces of the substructure, offering a generous sacrificial surface that prolongs the protection cycles between seasons. The absence of adequate cathodic protection can lead to pitting, perforations and accelerated deterioration of submerged metals, generating high-cost structural repairs.

When to replace this part?

Plate anodes should be inspected at least once a season, usually during the annual boat beaching. The unmistakable sign that the anode is exhausted is a reduction in its volume of more than 50%: when the anode has lost half of its mass, it no longer offers sufficient protection and must be replaced immediately. If pitting or signs of corrosion are observed on the hull, shafts or propellers, it is likely that the anode has reached the end of its useful life before the expected period, which may also indicate the presence of eddy currents in the usual anchorage or marina. Preventive replacement at the beginning of each season, without waiting for wear to be complete, guarantees continuous protection and avoids costly structural repairs in the underlying construction.
