Description

Function and technical context

Plate anodes are cathodic protection elements that act as an electrochemical sacrifice to defend the hull and metallic components of the boat against galvanic corrosion produced by the action of salt or brackish water. This anode, with dimensions of 455x100x50 mm, is made of high-purity zinc alloy, a material specifically designed for marine environments where the potential difference between different metals in contact with the electrolyte of water can quickly degrade rudders, shafts, propellers and hull structures. Its installation is carried out directly on the surface of the hull or transom, creating a preferential sacrifice point that concentrates the oxidation process in itself, keeping the structural parts and propulsion systems unscathed. If the anode is consumed excessively or is not renewed in time, galvanic corrosion directly attacks the noble metals of the boat, causing costly and irreversible damage to the hull, propulsion system and submerged accessories.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the plate anode needs to be replaced is a mass loss greater than 50% of its volume; At that point, the cathodic protection capability is compromised and adjacent metals are exposed to corrosion. It is recommended to inspect the anodes at each annual beaching or, at least, at the beginning and end of each navigation season, since their consumption rate depends on factors such as the salinity of the water, the density of eddy currents in the marina and the time spent in the water. Replacing the anode preventively—even if it is not yet completely consumed—is the most economical and effective practice to avoid major repairs to the hull and propulsion systems during the following season.
