Description

Function and technical context

Plate-shaped sacrificial anodes are fundamental elements of the cathodic protection system of vessels, acting as an electrochemical barrier that preserves the structural metals of the hull, shafts, propellers and other submerged components against galvanic corrosion. Being made of zinc or an alloy with high electrochemical activity, these anodes corrode in a controlled manner instead of the noble metals of the set, being the ones who "sacrifice themselves" to protect the integrity of the boat. Its correct installation on the hull is essential in both salt water and fresh or mixed water, since electrolytic corrosion can silently attack critical parts of the underwater structure in just a few weeks of navigation. Without adequate cathodic protection, components such as the tail shaft, horn, rudder or exhaust flanges can suffer irreversible damage that compromises safety and considerably increases repair costs at the dock.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that a plate anode needs replacement is the visible reduction in its mass: when the anode has lost approximately half of its volume or has an irregular and very porous surface, it has exhausted its protective capacity and must be replaced immediately. As a general rule in naval maintenance, it is recommended to inspect the anodes at each docking and replace them at the beginning of each nautical season or earlier if frequently sailing in areas of high salinity or with parasitic electrical currents in the port. Replacing the plate anode preventively is one of the most economical interventions in annual maintenance and prevents galvanic corrosion from reaching high-cost parts such as the propulsion shaft or the metal hull.
