Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are the electrochemical shield of any boat: they are deliberately corroded to protect the noblest metal parts of the hull, tailshaft, propeller and submerged accessories from galvanic corrosion. The PF3 anode with dimensions 195x60x30 mm works in the passive cathodic protection system, acting as a less noble electrode that oxidizes instead of the structural metals of the boat. Without proper anodic protection, salt or brackish water silently destroys aluminum or steel propellers, shafts, tail anodes and hulls, potentially compromising the structural integrity of the boat in a single season.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the anode has completed its cycle is the loss of more than 50% of its mass: when it is seen that it has been reduced to a fraction of its initial size, it no longer offers sufficient protection and must be replaced immediately. As a general rule, sacrificial anodes should be checked at least once a season—ideally at each beaching—and replaced before wear exceeds half of the material, without waiting for them to disappear completely. Changing the anode preventively is the most economical maintenance intervention available: its cost is minimal compared to repairing or replacing a propeller, shaft or hull damaged by galvanic corrosion.
