Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are the galvanic shield that protects the submerged metal parts of a boat against electrolytic corrosion, one of the most destructive phenomena in marine environments. This anode with a 147x95 mm support is made of zinc, a material that acts as a negative electrode in the galvanic cell and preferentially corrodes, thus preserving the hull, tail shaft, propeller and stern accessories. The function of the integrated support is to guarantee firm and stable electrical contact with the metal surface of the boat, an essential condition for the anode to fulfill its purpose efficiently. Without adequate cathodic protection, the noble metals of the propulsion assembly can degrade rapidly, generating costly structural damage and compromising navigation safety.

When to replace this part?

The main indicator that an anode needs to be changed is the visual loss of mass: when the anode has consumed approximately 50% of its volume, it has reached the limit of its useful life and must be replaced immediately, since an exhausted anode stops protecting. Under normal conditions of use, inspection and replacement is recommended at least once per nautical season, coinciding with the annual beaching of the boat. Replacing the anode preventively, without waiting for it to disappear completely, is the most cost-effective practice to avoid severe galvanic corrosion that requires repairing or replacing high-cost parts such as shafts, propellers or propeller casings.
