Function and technical context
Sacrificial anodes for welding are part of the boat's cathodic protection system, acting as an electrochemical shield that preserves submerged metal parts—keels, rudders, propellers, steel or aluminum hulls—against galvanic corrosion. Unlike screwed anodes, this type is fixed by direct welding on the metal surface to be protected, guaranteeing continuous electrical contact and without loss of conductivity over time. Being a metal with a lower electrochemical potential than steel or aluminum, the anode is consumed preferentially, preventing corrosion from attacking the permanent structures of the boat. Its correct installation is critical: a poorly welded or insufficient anode for the exposed surface can lead to pitting, thinning of plates and, in extreme cases, compromising the structural integrity of the hull.
When to replace this part?
The clearest sign that a sacrificial anode needs to be replaced is when it has lost between 50% and 60% of its mass: at that point its protective capacity decreases significantly and it stops effectively covering the assigned surface. It is common to detect signs of incipient corrosion in areas adjacent to the anode or irregular wear that indicates that the anode is working in conditions of high electrochemical aggressiveness, which makes it advisable to also check the boat's ground connections. As a preventive rule, it is recommended to inspect and replace the welded anodes at each annual beaching or at the beginning of each nautical season, regardless of their external appearance; Acting preventively is always more economical than repairing advanced corrosion in structural plates or appendages.
