Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial ingot anodes with insert are cathodic protection elements designed to protect submerged metal components of a vessel from galvanic corrosion. They act as the least noble metal in the electrochemical circuit, sacrificing themselves to preserve propellers, shafts, keels, hulls and other metal surfaces in contact with water. The integrated metal insert facilitates direct fixation on the surface to be protected, ensuring effective electrical contact and a solid installation without the need for additional elements. Without adequate anodic protection, electrolytic corrosion can progressively and irreversibly deteriorate high-cost parts such as propeller shafts, rudders or lead keels.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that an ingot anode needs to be replaced is when it has lost between 50% and 75% of its mass, since below that residual volume it no longer effectively protects adjacent surfaces. An anode that is completely consumed, or whose surface appears hardened, blackened or covered with scale, has lost its active sacrificial capacity. It is recommended to inspect and replace the anodes at least once per nautical season, or more frequently in port areas with high electrical conductivity in the water; Replacing them preventively at each grounding avoids costly structural damage and guarantees the integrity of the submerged metal elements throughout the navigation.
