Function and technical context
Sacrificial anodes in the form of an ingot with insert are key elements in the cathodic protection of vessels, acting as a galvanic barrier between the hull, keel, metal appendages and water. This type of anode works within the protection system against electrolytic corrosion, sacrificing itself in a controlled manner to preserve the structural and mechanical metal parts of the hull or underwater transmission. The integrated stainless steel insert facilitates a secure and durable fixation, guaranteeing permanent electrical contact with the surface to be protected. Without active and effective cathodic protection, the noble metals of the hull and appendages are exposed to galvanic corrosion, which can lead to serious structural damage, loss of hull integrity and costly failures to propellers, shafts and rudders.
When to replace this part?
Sacrificial anodes must be inspected at least once per nautical season, and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass or present a very irregular, grooved surface or with hard, non-eroded areas that indicate uneven consumption. A fully consumed or insufficient anode leaves adjacent metal surfaces unprotected, manifesting in visible pitting on the hull, shaft or propeller. Preventive replacement at the beginning of each season, or after a prolonged period of inactivity in waters with high conductivity, is the practice recommended by beaching technicians to avoid emergency interventions in the shipyard.
