Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes for flaps are essential cathodic protection elements in the steering and trim system of vessels equipped with interceptors or stern flaps. This anode, with dimensions of 130x80x30 mm and reference TEN00263, is installed directly on the metal surfaces of the flaps to act as a negative electrode in the galvanic cell that is formed when different metals are immersed in salt or brackish water. Its mission is to sacrifice itself—oxidizing in a controlled manner—to protect the aluminum or stainless steel structure of the flaps against electrolytic corrosion, which, if not stopped, degrades and perforates the fins until they become inoperative. Without adequate cathodic protection, flaps lose structural integrity and trim adjustability, compromising the performance and safety of the boat.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the flap anode has reached its useful life is a visible reduction in its mass: when the anode has lost approximately 50% of its volume or presents a very irregular and disintegrated surface, it must be replaced immediately, since it has stopped effectively protecting the base metal. If, when inspecting the flaps, pitting, rust stains or superficial corrosion are observed on the aluminum or steel of the fins, it is a sign that the anode has not acted correctly or was already exhausted. As a general rule for boats in regular use, it is recommended to inspect and replace the flap anodes at the beginning of each nautical season; Preventatively replacing them before they are completely depleted is the most economical way to avoid costly structural damage to the fins and their drive mechanisms.
