Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are the essential component of the cathodic protection system on vessels, acting as an electrochemical shield that absorbs galvanic corrosion instead of allowing it to affect the structural metal parts of the hull, shafts, propellers and submerged accessories. This Fairline anode is manufactured to be specifically integrated into Fairline brand boats, protecting them against corrosion generated by the difference in electrical potential between different metals in contact with salt or brackish water. Without effective cathodic protection, submerged bronze, stainless steel or aluminum parts deteriorate rapidly, compromising the structural integrity of the vessel and generating high-cost repairs. Its installation in the correct points of the hull guarantees that it is the anode itself that is consumed electrochemically, preserving the rest of the metallic elements of the boat.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes should be visually inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost approximately 40% to 50% of their mass, as below that threshold they no longer provide efficient cathodic protection. The most obvious symptoms that the anode is depleted are the appearance of pitting or visible corrosion on propellers, horns, shafts or hull hardware, as well as a completely consumed or fragmented anode after grounding. As a professional rule, it is recommended to replace the anodes at each annual beaching in a preventive manner, regardless of their apparent condition, especially in areas of salt water or with high conductivity, where consumption is noticeably faster.
