Description

Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode is the key component of your boat's cathodic protection system: it acts as a negative electrode in the galvanic cell that forms when dissimilar metals are exposed to salt or brackish water, attracting electrochemical corrosion and keeping your Fairline boat's hull, shaft, propeller and hardware intact. Being a less noble metal (usually zinc or aluminum depending on the navigation environment), it oxidizes in a controlled manner instead of the more valuable structural and propulsion elements. Without effective cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion can irreversibly damage critical parts of the propulsion system and submerged structure, leading to costly and potentially dangerous breakdowns.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the anode needs to be replaced is the visible loss of mass: when around 50% of its initial volume has been consumed, it has stopped offering sufficient protection and must be replaced before it begins to attack the metals it protects. The usual thing for boats in regular use is to inspect and replace the anodes at least once per nautical season, coinciding with the annual beaching to clean the hull; In waters with high conductivity or in vessels with great electrical activity on board, the review should be semiannual. Replacing the anode preventively is the most economical maintenance measure possible compared to the cost of repairing a corroded shaft, a pitted propeller or a galvanically damaged hull.
