Description

Function and technical context

Hull anodes are cathodic protection elements designed to sacrifice themselves in place of the hull and submerged metal components of the vessel, preventing the galvanic corrosion that salt and brackish water causes on aluminum, stainless steel and other structural metals. This aluminum alloy hull anode with dimensions 235x86 mm (reference CMMZ404-A) is installed directly on the hull using screws, creating continuous electrical contact with the metal structure of the boat. Being made of aluminum, it is the technically correct choice for vessels that operate in salty and brackish waters, where it offers optimal electrochemical potential compared to zinc anodes, with greater protection capacity per unit of mass and lower environmental impact. Its correct installation and periodic replacement is critical: a depleted anode leaves the hull, shafts, propeller and hardware exposed to an accelerated corrosion process that can lead to structural damage with high repair costs.

When to replace this part?

The main symptom of exhaustion of a hull anode is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost between 50% and 75% of its volume compared to the new state, it must be replaced without delay, regardless of the time elapsed. As a preventive maintenance guideline, it is recommended to inspect the hull anodes at each beaching or at least once per nautical season, and replace them systematically at each annual beaching even if they are not completely consumed. If pitting, oxidation or discoloration is detected in metal areas of the hull near the anode, it is an unequivocal sign that the cathodic protection has been insufficient and the anode must be replaced immediately. Replacing the anode preventively at each grounding is the most economical measure to avoid major repairs to the keel, horns or rudder.
