Description

Function and technical context

Hull anodes are cathodic protection elements designed to preserve the submerged metal parts of the vessel against galvanic corrosion, one of the most destructive phenomena in marine environments. This sacrificial anode acts as a negative electrode in the galvanic circuit, oxidizing in a controlled manner to protect more noble structures such as propellers, shafts, aluminum keels and metal hulls. With dimensions of 235x86 mm, it is designed for direct installation on the hull of the boat, covering a significant surface of protection against parasitic currents and electrolysis. Its correct installation and periodic renewal is essential to avoid accelerated corrosion in critical areas of the hull that, if not treated, can compromise the structural integrity and navigability of the vessel.

When to replace this part?

A hull anode should be replaced when it has lost approximately 50% of its mass, at which point its cathodic protection capability is significantly compromised. The most obvious symptoms that the anode is exhausted are the appearance of pits or spots of reddish or whitish oxidation in submerged metal areas, as well as visible and accelerated wear of propellers or shafts. The recommended replacement is annual, ideally at each seasonal stranding, although in waters with high conductivity or the presence of eddy currents it may be necessary to check every six months; Acting preventively avoids costly repairs in submerged structures that are difficult to access and have high replacement costs.
