Description

Function and technical context

Hull anodes are fundamental sacrificial elements in the cathodic protection of vessels, designed to prevent galvanic corrosion in the submerged metals of the hull, propellers, shafts and metal accessories in contact with water. This aluminum anode with dimensions 235x86 mm acts as a sacrificial pole: it corrodes in a controlled manner before the structural components of the boat do so, absorbing the galvanic currents generated by the potential difference between different submerged metals. Its direct installation on the hull shell guarantees effective protective coverage in areas of high electrochemical exposure, being especially indicated for steel, aluminum or fiber hulls with metal fittings. Without adequate cathodic protection, hull metals and submerged appendages can suffer pitting, thinning, and structural failure within months.

When to replace this part?

The anodes must be inspected at least at the beginning and end of each sailing season, and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, since below that threshold the cathodic protection capacity decreases drastically. Symptoms of depleted or missing anodes are detected visually as pitting, surface erosion or discoloration in the zinc of propellers, horns, rudders and hull hardware. As a preventive rule, many industry professionals recommend annual replacement as part of maintenance beaching, regardless of apparent condition, to ensure the integrity of submerged metal components throughout the season.
