Description

Function and technical context

Supported sacrificial anodes are cathodic protection elements designed to prevent galvanic corrosion in the submerged metal parts of the vessel: shafts, propellers, keels, hull anodes and aluminum or stainless steel structures. This anode with dimensions 118x60 mm incorporates an integrated support, which facilitates its direct fixation on flat surfaces of the hull or on transmission structures, guaranteeing reliable electrical contact and effective protection. Being made of zinc, it acts as a negative electrode in the galvanic pair, oxidizing in a controlled manner instead of the noble metals it protects, thus preserving the structural and functional integrity of the most critical components of the boat.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the anode has exhausted its useful life is the reduction of its mass to 50% or more compared to the initial volume: when the anode appears severely eroded, irregularly shaped or practically consumed, it must be replaced immediately before the adjacent metals begin to suffer pitting or active corrosion. It is recommended to check and replace the sacrificial anodes at least once a season, or every time the boat is taken ashore for maintenance, since in waters with high electrical conductivity or great galvanic activity, wear can be faster. Changing the anode preventively is the most economical measure to avoid serious damage to shafts, propellers or metal hulls that would involve very high-cost repairs.
