Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes like this component with reference CMB00E0450 are part of the boat's cathodic protection system, acting as a consumable element to preserve the metal parts of the hull, shaft, propeller and other submerged surfaces against galvanic corrosion. Being manufactured with a metal with a more negative electrochemical potential, the anode preferentially oxidizes, preventing corrosion from attacking more valuable structural and mechanical components. Cathodic protection is especially critical on boats with Bukh outboard or inboard motors, where continuous exposure to salt or brackish water accelerates the oxidation and deterioration processes of aluminum, stainless steel and bronze alloys. Without this anode in good condition, submerged metal surfaces are left unprotected and galvanic corrosion can compromise the structural integrity of the hull and propulsion components within weeks.

When to replace this part?

A sacrificial anode must be replaced when it has lost approximately half of its mass, since below that threshold it stops offering effective protection; Visually, a notable reduction in volume and an irregular surface with deep pits can be seen. The usual maintenance pattern for anodes on boats with moderate use is annual review and replacement coinciding with the seasonal beaching, although in areas of high salinity or on boats with greater activity it may be necessary to replace them every six months. Checking the condition of the anodes at each beaching and changing them preventively before they are completely used up is the simplest and most economical way to avoid serious corrosion damage to the structure and propulsion systems.
