Description

Function and technical context

Aluminum sacrificial anodes are the central element of the cathodic protection system in outboard motors and recreational boats: their function is to oxidize in a controlled manner to protect the noble metal parts of the engine - casings, propellers, shafts and components of the stern unit - against galvanic corrosion caused by salt, brackish or water with a high mineral content. Aluminum as an anode material is especially suitable for salt and brackish water environments, since it offers a higher electrochemical activity than zinc in these environments and does not generate toxic waste. If the anode is completely consumed without being replaced, galvanic corrosion directly attacks the aluminum alloys of the engine, potentially damaging structural components of the propulsion unit and generating very high-cost repairs. The CMZ24B-A anode is designed to be installed in a specific position on the outboard motor, guaranteeing continuous electrical contact that keeps the protection active throughout the boating season.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes must be inspected at least at the beginning and end of each nautical season; The general rule in the sector is to replace them when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, without waiting for them to be completely consumed. Symptoms of a depleted or missing anode are visible: pitting, surface erosion or whitish discoloration on the aluminum casings of the motor and stern unit, as well as the presence of corrosion on the propeller shaft or motor foot body. Replacing the CMZ24B-A anode preventively at the beginning of each season is the most economical maintenance measure to avoid structural damage that requires replacing high-cost parts or leaving the boat out of service in the middle of the season.
