Description

Function and technical context

The CMZ24B anode is a cathodic protection element designed to preserve submerged metal parts of the boat's hull and accessories against galvanic corrosion. It acts as a sacrificial metal, that is, it oxidizes in a controlled manner in place of more valuable structural or mechanical components, such as axles, propellers, keels, flying buttresses or tail legs. Its function is especially critical in salt or mixed water environments, where electrochemical corrosion can rapidly degrade exposed metal surfaces. Without adequate cathodic protection, progressive oxidation can compromise the integrity of parts that are difficult to access and have high replacement costs, putting both the safety of the boat and the useful life of the propulsion equipment at risk.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at least once a season, or each time the vessel goes into dry dock for maintenance. The clearest sign that the CMZ24B anode needs replacement is a mass loss of more than 50% compared to its initial volume: when the anode appears clearly depleted, cracked or with completely consumed areas, it has stopped protecting effectively. Not waiting for the anode to disappear completely is an essential professional practice, since an unprotected hull can suffer irreversible damage from galvanic pitting in a few weeks of sailing. Replacing the anode preventively at each grounding is the most economical solution to avoid much higher cost hull or transmission repairs.
