Description

Function and technical context

A cylinder polisher is the specialized tool used in naval mechanics workshops to restore the internal surface finish of the engine block cylinders after a grinding process or during a general overhaul of the propeller. It acts directly on the cylinder walls, eliminating marks, light scratches and the layer of oxide or varnish that prevents proper seating of the piston rings or segments. Its correct use in the engine rebuild process guarantees that the cylinder surface has the necessary roughness to retain the lubricating oil film and ensure optimal running-in of the new rings. Without proper polishing, the rings will not seat properly, resulting in loss of compression, excessive oil consumption, and significantly reduced life of the rebuilt engine.

When to replace or renew this tool?

The abrasive stones or wheel set of a cylinder polisher show wear when the working surface loses cutting ability, produces an uneven finish, or leaves visible grooves on the cylinder wall instead of the characteristic honing cross. It is recommended to check the condition of the abrasive elements after each grinding intervention or, at least, before undertaking a complete engine overhaul each nautical season. Replacing the polisher consumables at the appropriate time avoids repeating the grinding process due to a poor finish, saving shop time and ensuring the durability of the rebuilt marine engine.
