Description

Function and technical context

The 86 x 19 mm replacement zinc acts as a sacrificial anode, protecting the submerged metal parts of the boat against galvanic corrosion. This component works within the cathodic protection system of the hull, shaft or propeller, preferentially absorbing electrochemical wear that would otherwise attack higher value metals such as bronze, aluminum or stainless steel. Its correct installation and periodic replacement is decisive to preserve the structural integrity of the propulsion elements and the hull, avoiding costly damage due to pitting or galvanic erosion that can compromise safe navigation.

When to replace this part?

Zinc anodes should be inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their volume, show irregular erosion, or become soft to the touch. In boats that navigate in waters with high conductivity or that remain moored continuously, wear can be faster, so it is advisable to check the condition of the anode every time the boat leaves the water. Replacing zinc preventively, without waiting for its complete exhaustion, is the practice recommended by any naval mechanic to prevent noble metals from being exposed to electrolysis and generating high-cost repairs.
