Description

Function and technical context

This 51 x 16mm replacement zinc is a sacrificial anode designed to protect submerged metal parts of your boat from galvanic corrosion, one of the most destructive processes in marine environments. It acts as a negative electrode in the galvanic pair that is formed when different metals coexist in water, attracting electrochemical corrosion to itself and preserving propellers, shafts, outboard motor casings and other more expensive components. Without an anode in good condition, the galvanic attack progressively degrades structural and propulsion parts, potentially causing serious failures that are difficult to repair at sea. The dimensions of 51 x 16 mm determine its protective coverage area and its compatibility with the specific mounting points for which it is designed.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the anode has exhausted its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost around 50% of its volume, it must be replaced immediately, since its protective capacity is compromised and the adjacent metal components begin to corrode. The review and replacement of the sacrificial anodes must be carried out at least once a season, coinciding with the annual beaching of the boat, although in areas with high conductivity water or in continuous navigation it may be necessary to change it earlier. Replacing the anode preventively is the lowest cost maintenance measure that can avoid the repair of shafts, propellers or casings, which cost much more.
