Function and technical context

This 63 x 10 mm engine anode acts as a galvanic protection element in the propulsion and cooling system of the outboard or inboard engine, sacrificing itself electrochemically to preserve the most valuable metal parts such as the block, shaft or heat exchanger. Its operating principle is based on differential galvanic corrosion: being a less noble metal than aluminum or engine steel, the anode oxidizes first, diverting the electrolytic current that would otherwise attack structural components of the propellant. The CME0A reference corresponds to an anode with cylindrical fixing geometry that is installed directly on the motor body, guaranteeing permanent electrical contact with the metallic mass of the assembly. Without active cathodic protection in good condition, galvanic corrosion can irreversibly deteriorate high precision parts, causing seawater leaks, loss of performance and serious breakdowns in the cooling circuit.

When to replace this part?

Engine anodes should be inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, have a completely rusted or cracked surface, or when incipient corrosion is detected on adjacent aluminum or steel parts of the engine, a clear sign that the anode has ceased to provide effective protection. In boats that navigate in waters with high conductivity or that remain in the water continuously, the useful life can be considerably reduced, so it is recommended to check the condition of the anode every 100 hours of navigation or at the beginning and end of each season. Replacing this component preventively is one of the most economical and effective maintenance interventions to avoid major repairs due to corrosion in the engine.
