MOTOR ANODE 3-5/8'' x 3/4''
Description
Function and technical context
Sacrificial motor anodes are cathodic protection elements designed to preserve the submerged metal parts of the outboard or inboard motor against galvanic corrosion. Made of high-purity zinc, this anode acts as a sacrificial electrode: it corrodes in a controlled manner before critical engine components - such as the tail casing, propeller shaft or cooling caps - thus protecting the structural integrity of the powertrain. Its installation in areas exposed to salt, brackish or high electrical conductivity water is essential to guarantee the durability of the motor and avoid irreversible damage to cast or marine aluminum parts.
When to replace this part?
The clearest sign that the anode needs to be replaced is the loss of more than 50% of its mass: when the zinc appears visibly depleted, cracked or perforated, it has stopped effectively protecting the engine. It is recommended to inspect and replace the engine anodes at the beginning of each nautical season or, at least, every 12 months, with the replacement brought forward if the boat operates in waters with high salinity or next to electrical installations at the mooring. Replacing the anode preventively before it is completely consumed is the most economical measure to avoid major repairs to the engine tailstock or water cooling system.
