Description
Function and technical context
Sacrificial anodes for outboard or inboard motors are the first line of defense against galvanic corrosion in the submerged metal components of the boat. This zinc anode with dimensions 3-3/8'' x 3/4'' (reference CME4) acts as an active electrode that corrodes in a controlled manner instead of attacking the noble parts of the engine, such as the casing, shaft or propeller. When installed directly on the engine block or cover, it interrupts the electrolytic circuit that generates electrochemical corrosion, effectively protecting the aluminum alloys and structural parts of the drive assembly. Without this cathodic protection, salt or brackish water acts as an electrolyte and progressively destroys the metals of the engine from the inside to the outside, generating irreversible and costly damage.
When to replace this part?
The clearest indicator that the anode needs to be changed is the visible loss of mass: when it has consumed approximately 50% of its volume, its protective capacity is compromised and can leave the metals of the engine exposed. Unlike other maintenance parts, zinc anodes are inspected and replaced at least once per boating season, or sooner if the boat operates in waters with high conductivity or remains in the water for a long time. Replacing the anode preventively at the beginning of each season is the most economical measure to prevent galvanic corrosion from reaching the motor casing or mounting bolts, repairs that can multiply maintenance costs tenfold.
