2 x 3/8 MOTOR ANODE
Description
Function and technical context
Sacrificial anodes are cathodic protection elements that are installed directly on the block or housing of the outboard or stationary motor to prevent galvanic corrosion on critical metal components. This anode with dimensions 2" x 3/8" acts as a negative electrode in the galvanic pair, sacrificing itself to protect the aluminum, steel or cast iron parts of the motor against electrochemical attack caused by immersion in fresh, salty or contaminated water. Its correct installation and periodic replacement is essential to preserve the structural integrity of the engine block, transmission and other submerged elements, avoiding perforations, pitting and structural failures that can compromise navigation.
When to replace this part?
The clearest sign that the anode must be replaced is when it has lost more than 50% of its mass due to electrochemical wear, presenting an irregular, porous surface or with visible loss of material. The engine anodes are checked at least once per nautical season - ideally at the annual beaching - and must always be replaced before their wear is complete, since a depleted anode leaves the metal components of the engine completely unprotected against corrosion. Replacing the anode preventively at each seasonal maintenance is the most economical measure to avoid major repairs to the block or transmission.
