2 x 3/8 MOTOR ANODE
Description
Function and technical context
Sacrificial anodes for outboard or inboard motors act as cathodic protection, absorbing galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack critical metal parts of the engine in contact with salt or brackish water. This zinc anode measuring 2" x 3/8" (reference CME00) is installed directly on the engine block or casing, forming an electrochemical barrier that concentrates corrosive wear on the anode itself, thus preserving higher-cost components such as the shaft, propeller, heat exchanger or sterndrive casing. Without effective cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion progresses silently and can structurally compromise the engine within a few sailing seasons.
When to replace this part?
The clearest symptom that the anode is exhausted is the appearance of pitting or visible corrosion on adjacent metal parts of the engine, an unequivocal sign that the zinc no longer offers sufficient protection. As a general rule, engine anodes should be inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, without waiting for them to disappear completely. Replacing the anode preventatively at the beginning of each season is the recommended practice of any professional boat shop: the cost of a new anode is minimal compared to an advanced galvanic corrosion repair on the engine block or shaft.
