MOTOR ANODE 2'' x 3/4''
Description
Function and technical context
Sacrificial anodes for motors are fundamental elements in the cathodic protection of metal components submerged or in contact with water. This anode acts as a negative electrode in the galvanic cell that is inevitably formed when different metals coexist in an electrolytic medium such as seawater or fresh water with minerals. By sacrificing in a controlled manner, it protects critical engine parts – such as the propeller shaft, tail housing or water pump – from electrolytic corrosion, which can irreversibly deteriorate these components in a matter of weeks. Its 2'' x 3/4'' geometry (reference CME3) is designed to fit precisely into the specific motor mounting point, guaranteeing the electrical contact necessary for effective cathodic protection.
When to replace this part?
The clearest sign that the anode needs to be replaced is when it has lost between 50% and 75% of its mass: if it appears visibly reduced, cracked or with its surface completely eroded, it has completed its life cycle and no longer protects the engine. It is recommended to inspect the anode at least once per sailing season and replace it preventively at the beginning of each season or after prolonged wintering, regardless of the degree of visible wear. Delaying the replacement of a depleted anode can lead to corrosion of much more expensive components, such as the engine block or metal impellers, turning a minor repair into a serious breakdown that forces the boat to beach.
