Description

Function and technical context

Engine sacrificial anodes are cathodic protection elements that are installed directly on the block or submerged metal parts of the propellant to prevent galvanic corrosion. Made of zinc or an alloy with high electrochemical activity, this anode measuring 1-1/4" x 1/2" acts as a sacrificial electrode: being a more active metal than the aluminum or steel of the engine, it corrodes first, protecting the structural parts of the propeller against the electrolytic attack of salt, brackish or fresh water. Without effective cathodic protection, metal engine components are exposed to accelerated corrosion that can irreversibly damage the block, tail housing or mounting bolts, leading to costly breakdowns and compromising the structural integrity of the power unit.

When to replace this anode?

The clearest sign that the anode needs replacement is when it has lost more than 50% of its mass: if it appears noticeably reduced, deformed or cracked, it no longer offers sufficient protection. Motor anodes should be inspected at least once a season and, in particularly aggressive waters or waters with high electrical conductivity (ports with eddy currents), every 6 months. Replacing the CME1F anode preventively at the beginning of each season is the practice recommended by any naval mechanic: the cost of a new anode is minimal compared to repairing a block or tail affected by galvanic corrosion.
