Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes such as CME1E are part of the cathodic protection system of the outboard or stationary motor, acting as an electrochemical barrier against galvanic corrosion that affects metals submerged or in contact with salt, brackish or river water. This anode, with dimensions of 1-1/2" x 1/2", is installed directly on the block or metal components of the engine, oxidizing in a controlled manner in place of the structural materials of the powertrain. Without adequate cathodic protection, the engine's aluminum and zinc alloys are exposed to an accelerated corrosion process that can irreversibly compromise crankcases, cylinder head covers, transmission casings and other high-cost elements. Its correct installation guarantees the integrity of the engine throughout the nautical season.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the anode has reached its useful life is a reduction in mass by more than 50%, at which point it no longer offers sufficient protection and must be replaced immediately. As a general rule of preventive maintenance on boats in regular use, it is recommended to inspect the anodes at least once a season and replace them if they show severe wear, an irregular surface or a whitish color that indicates depletion of the active material. Replacing the CME1E anode before launching is the most economical measure to avoid structural corrosion that leads to costly repairs in the workshop or, worse, breakdowns at sea.
