ANODE LOMBARDINI
Description
Function and technical context
Sacrificial anodes are essential cathodic protection elements on any vessel with metal components exposed to salt or brackish water. Its mission is to corrode in a controlled manner instead of the nobler metal parts of the engine or hull, such as shafts, propellers, pump bodies or transmission casings. In Lombardini engines installed in marine applications, galvanic protection ensures that electrochemical corrosion does not compromise high-cost parts or reduce the useful life of the propulsion assembly. Without a healthy anode, corrosion silently creeps into the structural metal and can cause serious mechanical failure or render difficult-to-replace components unusable.
When to replace this part?
The clearest symptom that the anode has exhausted its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately 50% of its volume compared to the new state, it must be replaced without delay, since its protection capacity is compromised. The recommended inspection is at least once per nautical season, and in waters with high conductivity or strong galvanic currents a semiannual inspection may be necessary. Replacing the anode preventively at each seasonal tune-up is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion damage to metal components of the engine or transmission that would involve much higher cost repairs.
