Description

Function and technical context

This sacrificial anode acts as a galvanic protector in Caterpillar engines and marine equipment, interposing a metallic mass of high negative electrochemical potential between the engine and water to absorb electrolytic corrosion. It works within the cathodic protection system of the engine-boat assembly, being especially critical in installations exposed to salt or brackish water where galvanic corrosion can attack high-value metal parts such as pump bodies, cooling covers, exchangers or transmission casings. If the anode is completely consumed without being replaced in time, electrolytic corrosion begins to affect the structural metals of the engine or hull, causing irreversible damage and very high-cost repairs. Its function is, therefore, to consume itself to preserve the integrity of the rest of the metal components of the system.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the anode needs to be replaced is a reduction in mass of more than 50%, at which point it no longer offers sufficient protection; In high salinity environments or with intense eddy currents this wear can be achieved in a single navigation season. It is recommended to inspect the anode during each seasonal maintenance and replace it preventively at the beginning of each nautical year, without waiting for it to be completely eroded. Changing the anode before it is completely used up is the most economical measure to avoid replacing structural parts of the Caterpillar engine, the cost of which is much higher.
