ANODE PLATE 9.14Kg.
Description
Function and technical context
Sacrificial anodes in plate format constitute the main cathodic protection system in boats, acting as an electrochemical shield against galvanic corrosion that affects the hull, propeller, transmission shaft and other submerged metal elements. This type of anode is installed directly on flat surfaces of the hull or keel, offering a large contact area that guarantees effective and uniform protection in areas continuously exposed to salt, brackish or fresh water. Its function is to sacrifice itself through controlled oxidation, preserving the integrity of the noblest structural metals of the vessel and thus avoiding irreversible damage due to electrolytic corrosion. Without adequate cathodic protection, galvanic attack can deteriorate the hull, propellers and shafts in a single sailing season, generating high-cost repairs at the dock.
When to replace this part?
The clearest sign that a plate anode needs to be replaced is when it has lost between 50% and 70% of its mass, at which point its protective ability is compromised and adjacent metals begin to be exposed. It is recommended to inspect the anodes at least once a season, ideally at each annual beaching, and replace them whenever they show visible wear, irregular surfaces or signs of passivation (whitish layer that prevents the electrochemical reaction). Performing the change preventively at the beginning of each season is the most recommended practice by nautical maintenance professionals: the cost of a new anode is minimal compared to that of repairing a corroded shaft or a damaged hull.
