Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are cathodic protection elements designed to prevent galvanic corrosion on submerged metal parts of Hamilton propulsion systems. Manufactured from an alloy with a lower electrochemical potential than the structural metal of the engine or transmission, these components preferentially corrode, acting as a sacrificial shield against the electrolytic attack of salt, brackish or fresh water. Its correct installation at strategic points of the Hamilton propulsion system guarantees the integrity of high-cost parts such as casings, shafts, impellers and nozzles, preventing structural damage that would compromise the performance and safety of the boat.

When to replace this part?

The wear of a sacrificial anode is visible to the naked eye: when the anode has lost approximately 50% of its mass or has a noticeably irregular, friable or practically consumed surface, it must be replaced immediately. The inspection of the anodes should be carried out at least once per nautical season, and in vessels that operate in areas of high electrical conductivity or with leakage currents on board, the inspection should be more frequent. Replacing the anode preventively before it is completely depleted is the most economical way to protect the metal components of the Hamilton system, avoiding major repairs in the dock or, worse still, breakdowns while sailing.
