The Hamilton engine ring anode is a cathodic protection element specifically designed to act as an electrochemical sacrifice on the Hamilton propulsion engine ring assembly. Its mission is to concentrate galvanic corrosion on itself, protecting the structural metal parts of the engine - such as the casing, the impeller and the nozzle components - against the attack of salt, brackish or water with a high mineral content. This type of anode works in the hydraulic water jet propulsion system, characteristic of Hamilton units, where continuous exposure to the aquatic environment makes anodic protection a critical element of maintenance. If the anode is completely consumed without being replaced, galvanic corrosion begins to directly attack the structural parts of the engine, which can lead to severe and irreparable damage to high-cost components.
When to replace this part?
The anodes must be inspected at the beginning of each nautical season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, without waiting for their total consumption. On boats that regularly operate in salt or brackish water, wear can be significantly faster, so it is recommended to check the condition of the hoop anode each time the boat leaves the water for maintenance or is docked. Replacing the anode preventively is the most economical measure to avoid costly repairs on the Hamilton unit, as it protects propulsion components whose replacement or repair requires a much higher outlay.
