80W-90 oil for tails and reversers is the specific lubricant designed to work in the underwater transmission systems of boats with Volvo Penta propulsion. Its main function is to protect the bevel gears, axles and bearings of the tail bevel group or the reverser, elements that support high torsion and friction loads during navigation. The 80W-90 viscosity guarantees a stable lubricant film both in cold starts and under the thermal and mechanical demands of fully loaded navigation. Deterioration or insufficient level of this oil causes accelerated wear of the gears, overheating of the conical group and, in the most serious cases, seizure of the transmission, which can leave the boat without propulsion in the open sea.

When to replace this oil?

The most common sign that the tail or inverter oil needs to be renewed is the appearance of a milky or whitish color in the lubricant, indicative of water entering through the tail seal, which seriously compromises the lubricating and anti-corrosion capacity of the fluid. The presence of metallic particles in the oil is also a reason for urgent replacement, which shows internal wear of the gears. As a general preventive maintenance guideline, it is recommended to renew the tail and reverse oil at least once per season or every 100 hours of navigation, whichever comes first. Performing this change on a scheduled basis is the most effective measure to avoid costly breakdowns in the bevel group and prolong the useful life of the transmission.
