The stainless steel exhaust mixture elbow is the component that joins the exhaust manifold to the wet outlet pipe, allowing the injection of cooling water into the exhaust gases to cool them and conduct them safely out of the boat. It works in the water-cooled exhaust system (wet exhaust), where the mixture of hot gases and seawater is especially aggressive due to both high temperatures and marine corrosion. Its stainless steel construction gives it superior resistance to salt water corrosion compared to cast iron versions.
