Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are the galvanic shield of any marine propulsion unit: as they are made of a zinc or aluminum alloy with a lower electrochemical potential than the base metal of the engine, the anode is preferably corroded and not the structural parts of the propeller or the transmission. In Scania engines for marine applications, the complete anode reference TEN02200T protects areas exposed to salt, brackish or even fresh water with high levels of electrical conductivity, acting as a continuous barrier against electrolytic corrosion. Without this component in good condition, transmission casings, cooling manifolds and engine body metal components are left unprotected, which can lead to irreversible structural damage and costly drydock repairs.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the anode has exhausted its useful life is the reduction in its mass by more than 50%: when it is visually seen that it has decreased significantly, has deep surface cracks or has been reduced to a residual core adhered to the support, it must be replaced immediately. Common practice among marine mechanics is to inspect and renew sacrificial anodes at the beginning of each sailing season or, in areas of high salinity or strong eddy currents, every 6 months of active use. Replacing the anode preventively before it is completely consumed is the most economical measure to avoid galvanic pitting in high-cost parts of the Scania powertrain.
