SCANIA ANODE
Description
Function and technical context
This zinc anode acts as a sacrificial electrode in the cathodic protection system of the Scania outboard or inboard motor, protecting it against galvanic corrosion generated by contact between different metals submerged in salt or brackish water. It works directly on the exposed metal components of the powertrain and transmission, attracting the electrochemical oxidation process to itself so that it wears out instead of the block, propeller or gearbox. Without effective cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion can silently attack high-cost parts such as the tailshaft, engine mount or propeller casing, drastically shortening the life of the drive assembly.
When to replace this part?
Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at the beginning of each boating season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, as their protective capacity decreases significantly from that point onwards. Signs that the anode has completed its cycle are a visible reduction in volume, an irregular surface with deep pits or, in advanced cases, the appearance of superficial corrosion on the metal components it should protect. As a preventive rule recommended by maintenance technicians: change the TEN02200 anode once a year or sooner if the boat operates in waters with high electrical conductivity, thus avoiding costly repairs to structural parts of the propeller.
