Function and technical context
The TEN02003 cooling anode is a cathodic protection element designed to be integrated into the cooling circuit of General Motors (G.M.) marine engines. Its primary function is to act as a sacrificial metal, attracting galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack critical metal components of the cooling system, such as the thermostat housing, water passages or engine block. By working in contact with the seawater that circulates inside the engine, it degrades in a controlled manner, protecting the most valuable and complex parts. If this anode is not renewed in time, electrochemical corrosion can progress to structural components of the cooling circuit, causing water leaks, engine overheating and breakdowns that require costly repair.
When to replace this part?
The cooling anodes must be inspected at the beginning and end of each nautical season, and replaced when they show wear greater than 50% of their volume or when signs of irregular corrosion appear on the adjacent metal components of the water circuit. A clear indication that the anode has ceased to perform its protective function is the appearance of pitting or rust deposits on the internal surfaces of the cooling system. Preventive replacement at the beginning of each season, regardless of its apparent visual condition, is the recommended practice by naval maintenance professionals to avoid unplanned shutdowns and major engine repairs.
