GM COOLING ANODE

Function and technical context

This cooling anode for G.M. engines. It acts as a galvanic protection element within the engine water circuit, sacrificing itself electrochemically to preserve the internal metal components of the block and the cooling system casing. Being in direct contact with sea or brackish water circulating through the internal passages, it intercepts galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack jackets, water passages and metal surfaces of the block. Its presence is critical in vessels that operate in saline environments or with water with high mineral content, where electrolytic corrosion can destroy structural components of the engine in a few seasons if the anode does not perform its function correctly.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a depleted cooling anode are the appearance of visible corrosion in internal water passages, pitting on metal surfaces of the block or whitish deposits in the cooling circuit. It is recommended that the cooling anodes be inspected and replaced at least once a season or when the anode has lost more than 50% of its mass, which usually occurs after 200-300 hours of navigation in saline waters. Replacing the anode preventively at the beginning of each season is the most economical measure to avoid serious internal damage to the engine that can lead to high-cost repairs or even replacement of the block.
